East Representative Candidates

Lisa Jones
PictureMelisa Jones
Professionally, I am currently in my fourth year as Director of Adult Education at Texarkana College.  I have learned a lot in four years about the adult education world.  I am an advocate for these programs and the students we are serving.  I want to increase community and state knowledge of the benefits and needs of these programs.
My time on the CASP Board has provided me with experience in promoting, planning, and executing a conference. I am currently serving as President of the Texas College Reading and Learning Association. I previously served as membership chair for Texas Association of Developmental Education for two years and then as TxCRLA secretary for two years.
Prior to becoming AEL Director, I worked as Developmental Education Coordinator and Associate English Professor for nine years at Texarkana College.  The worlds of AEL and DE are merging, so I bring knowledge from both worlds, as well as the K-12 system, because I spent fifteen years teaching high school English, journalism, and history. I believe that twenty-eight years in education at various levels and programs provides me with a unique perspective on collaboration for adult education.
Personally, I live in Redwater, Texas, which is a small town fifteen miles from Texarkana.  I have been married to my husband, Jason, for thirty years.  We have three adult children: Jacob, Taylor, and Josey.  I enjoy reading, gardening, and travelling.

Charmyn Tumey

Charmyn Tumey has been with Kilgore College Adult Education and Literacy program for six years and effective June 1, her role changed to Director of Adult Education and Literacy. Within the adult education and literacy program, she was the lead instructor and coordinator of events, as well as coordinator of instructional support and distance learning. She has also instructed workforce development classes with Kilgore College, teaching continuing education business courses. Prior to working for Kilgore College, Charmyn worked as an adjunct instructor for Vista College teaching business administration courses, where she was able to lead in the development of a business clinic to give students real hands on experience as small business owners. With over 10 years in the business sector, Charmyn worked as a sales trainer and manager with Harley Davidson and  as a training coordinator and sales manager with New York and Company.

Charmyn contributes a great deal of her leadership experience and business acumen to her experience at Texas Woman’s University, serving on various committees and in various roles with the Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and with the Texas Woman’s University chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, which consisted of all the African American sororities at Texas Woman’s university.

In addition to serving as East Region Representative for TALAE, Charmyn also serves as a board trustee with the Pine Tree Education Foundation, membership co-chair of the Kappa Mu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international professional society for women educators, member of TABPHE, Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education, East Texas chapter, member of the Epsilon Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and in her most rewarding job, as a troop leader and cookie manager for Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas Troop 7497.

If chosen to serve as the East Region Representative for TALAE, my goal is to continue to advocate for adult education and literacy in my region, as well as grow the TALAE membership in this region. I believe it is important that someone is this role works well on a team, advocates for their region, believes in collaboration, and can engage with other adult education programs and community partners, and I believe I exhibit all of those qualities and traits.
