South Central Representative Candidates
Milena Garcia
When I arrived in the U.S. from Colombia, in the early 2000’s, I had an ambitious goal, it was to learn English. I wanted to build a better life in the U.S.
I registered for classes here in the NISD AEL program. I was taking English classes in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. I validated my credentials to be able to apply for a job; I have an undergraduate degree in business administration and a master’s degree in human resources.
In 2003 I started working in this amazing program and since then, I have had different roles: instructional aide, teacher, distance learning coach, and now I am part of the leadership team as the supervisor.
My dedication led me to be named Teacher of the Year by the Adult Education & Literacy Alamo
Consortium in 2019
I decided to work in AEL because I want to inspire the students as someone who has learned English and has been able to thrive in the U.S. I always have the goal of gaining the students’ trust and building a close but respectful relationship with them. I love my job!
